The are literally hundreds of fitness books out there. I can’t claim to have read them all but here is my rundown on what I consider the best books to be, based on my twenty five years plus experience as a fitness professional.

The reason I have chosen these five over other options out there is there simplicity. When I say that I don’t mean they’re is to do, they will all get progressively more grueling the further you get into them. More that they are based on compound movements rather than lots of different movements that require a different machine for each muscle. As the body rarely works as isolated muscles why train that way? The body responds better to a compound exercise, like the squat for instance, than it does an isolation exercise like the leg extension.

No 1: Starting Strength

Best for Beginners and restarters

The Starting Strength program is a strength training program developed by Mark Rippetoe. It is designed to help beginners build a foundation of strength by focusing on fundamental compound lifts, including the squat, deadlift, bench press, press, and power clean. The program emphasizes progressive overload, which means gradually increasing weight lifted over time, to stimulate muscle growth and strength gains. Workouts typically involve three to four exercises per session, three times per week, with an emphasis on proper form and technique. The program also includes rest days to allow for muscle recovery and growth. The Starting Strength program has become popular among fitness enthusiasts and athletes alike, as it is effective for building strength and improving overall fitness levels.

No 2: Practical Programming for Strength Training

Best for experienced lifters

Practical programming for strength training is a training approach that emphasizes the use of proven scientific principles to optimize strength and conditioning programs. It is based on the principles of progressive overload, individualization, specificity, and variation, and it focuses on creating programs that are both effective and practical for a wide range of athletes and fitness enthusiasts. This approach typically involves tailoring training programs to an individual’s specific goals, fitness level, and ability, while also incorporating a variety of different exercises, training methods and rest periods to promote recovery and prevent overuse injuries. Ultimately, practical programming for strength training is all about creating a training regimen that is both challenging and sustainable over the long-term, and that leads to measurable improvements in strength, endurance, and overall fitness.

No 3:The Barbell Prescription

Best for over 40’s

The Barbell Prescription is a strength training program developed by Jonathon Sullivan and Andy Baker that emphasizes the use of barbells and compound exercises to improve strength, power, and overall fitness. The program is designed for people over 40 but can be used by people of all ages and fitness levels and includes a focus on proper form and technique to prevent injury. The Barbell Prescription is based on the principles of Starting Strength and incorporates progressive overload, linear progression, and intensity cycling to continuously challenge the body and promote gains in strength and muscle mass. Its main goal is to help individuals achieve their fitness goals through safe and effective strength training.
